Accused man’s house set ablaze following chopping death of man on Red Hills Road
Dramatic scenes unfolded along Red Hills Road in Kingston today (September 16), following the chopping death of a man and the wounding of two others in the community, this morning.
Dead is Phillip Bennett, a construction worker of Walkers Hill, Red Hills in St. Andrew.
Reports are that about 7:00 a.m., Bennett was walking along Red Hills Road, when he was attacked and chopped by a man, believed to be of unsound mind.
Bennett and two other people who were wounded were taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The accused man was taken into police custody, however, several residents were not happy with this and demanded jungle justice.
This then led to an alleged confrontation involving lawmen and a civilian, a part of which was captured on camera.
However, this was not enough to deter irate residents from registering their anger, as they later set the accused man’s dwelling ablaze.
Head of the St. Andrew North Police Division, Superintendent Sherika Service, told Irie FM News that the Fire Brigade was called to put out the fire.
She said the police will maintain a strong presence in the area.
Meantime, Superintendent Service said the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau, IPROB is investigating the alleged confrontation involving lawmen and a civilian.
