JUTC reviewing measures to enhance luggage management

Written byClement Reid

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) says it is reviewing measures to enhance luggage management and passenger accountability, including the potential implementation of passenger, baggage and or luggage tagging systems.

The company said this is expected to result in strengthened procedures for the handling and recording of unclaimed or left-behind items at JUTC facilities.

The JUTC made the announcement following reports by a passenger that a luggage she had boarded a company bus with was reportedly missing at the end of her trip.

In a release yesterday, the JUTC sought to clarify the incident noting that based on investigation, detailed checks and verification with the relevant personnel and security team, it was revealed that the bag in question did not board the JUTC bus.

The company said the bag was left at the Half Way Tree Transport Centre prior to the passenger’s departure.

JUTC said the bag was located and placed in the custody of the security personnel stationed at the Transport Centre, where it has been secured in the guard house pending its collection by the owner.

The Company said the owner has been contacted and advised to make arrangements to verify and collect the luggage in question.

According to the JUTC its established policy regulates that passengers transport luggage and other personal belongings at their own risk, and the company does not accept liability for loss or damage to such property in accordance with its stated terms and conditions.

It said notwithstanding this policy and the findings of the investigation, it recognizes that the incident highlights an opportunity to further strengthen its processes for the handling and identification of passenger luggage, particularly on longer-distance and express services.

The JUTC says it remains committed to continuous improvement in the delivery of safe, reliable and customer-focused public transportation services.

The Company said it values passenger feedback and will continue to use such feedback to identify gaps, strengthen its systems and improve the overall passenger experience.

JUTC says it regrets the distress and inconvenience experienced by the passenger and remains committed to resolving matters of this nature in a professional, fair and transparent manner.
