National Security Minister expresses concern about shooting and wounding of three policemen, during armed confrontation in St James

National Security and Peace Minister Dr Horace Chang has expressed concern about the shooting and wounding of three policemen, during an armed confrontation with persons he describes as highly dangerous criminals, in the Mount Salem Zone of Special Operations in St James early this morning.
The three officers, a corporal and two constables have been taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred along Crawford Street about 3:18 A.M., while the police were conducting an operation. One man was fatally shot.
Reports are that a firearm was also seized at the scene.
Dr Chang has commended the officers for their courage, professionalism and bravery in responding to what he said was clearly a highly dangerous situation.
He added that he’s relieved that despite being wounded, they were able to respond effectively, resulting in the fatal shooting of a dangerous criminal.
The National Security Minister said this incident is a stark reminder of the nature of the threat faced by the security forces.
He stated that police officers routinely confront individuals who are armed, dangerous and willing to use violence against those who stand between them and their criminal activities.
Dr Chang has expressed hope for a full and speedy recovery for the three policemen and extended his support to their families at this time.
He stated that the incident also reinforces the importance of sustaining the security gains made in communities such as Mount Salem.
Noting that the restoration of peace and order does not mean the threat of criminality disappears, Dr Chang said the Ministry and the JCF remain vigilant and will ensure that criminal elements are not allowed to reclaim communities from which they have been displaced.
