The recommendation made by the board of the St Mary High School for a new principal was reportedly not supported by the Teachers’ Services Commission (TSC).
The revelation was made by the Education Ministry, following concerns raised by Member of Parliament for St Mary Central, Omar Newell.
He had called on the Ministry to urgently approve the recommendation of the board of governors for the appointment of a principal, noting that the institution should not enter another academic year without settled leadership.
In a statement last evening, the Ministry said the appointment of principals in public educational institutions, follows an established transparent process.
It added, that the board of management is responsible for advertising the vacancy, shortlisting and interviewing candidates, then making a recommendation.
The recommendation and supporting documentation are then submitted to the TSC for review and deliberation.
Following the decision of the TSC, the minister conducts a review.
The Ministry said, regarding the St Mary High appointment process, the TSC did not support the recommendation, due to a number of concerns.
It said the TSC will work with the institution to better understand the recruitment process, in accordance with established procedures.
The Ministry noted that it recognises the importance of stable leadership to all schools, and will continue to support the boards, as they move to complete the process and secure the appointment of senior leadership.
