A police constable is under investigation after his three-year-old son allegedly gained access to his service pistol and accidentally shot his one-year-old sister in the leg in Siloah, St. Elizabeth yesterday.
The child has been admitted to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police reports are that at about 4:40 p.m., the constable was on a family outing when the incident occurred.
Investigators say the family had just left an attraction and was in a motor vehicle when the constable stopped, exited the vehicle and left his service pistol inside.
It is reported that the three-year-old gained access to the firearm, resulting in the one-year-old being shot in the leg.
The Independent Commission of Investigations and the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau are investigating the incident.
