Jamaican delegation heads home after successful 19 medal haul at Commonwealth Games

Members of Jamaica’s delegation are now making their way home after a solid week of performances in 10 sporting disciplines at the just-ended Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Jamaica finished second on the track and field table with 18 medals, including 10 gold, three silver and five bronze, following a memorable and outstanding run by Djanea Oakley on the anchor leg of the 4×400 mixed relay on the weekend.

Oakley, who earlier won the individual women’s 400 metres gold in 50.21 seconds, got the baton in fourth place on the final leg and then went in chase of victory, history and the gold.

Jamaica’s winning team of Zandrion Barnes, Leah Anderson, Delano Kennedy and Oakley came home in 3 minutes 10.96 seconds, ahead of England in 3 minutes 11.58 seconds and Nigeria, third, in a season-best 3 minutes 12.85 seconds.

In terms of the medal spread for Jamaica, of the 10 gold medals won, six were on the track and four were in the field. The field gold medals came from Samantha Hall, who won the women’s discus; Jordan Scott, who won the men’s triple jump; Tajay Gayle, who took the men’s long jump; and Romain Beckford, who snatched the men’s high jump crown.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the field events, Fredrick Dacres in the men’s discus and Ackelia Smith took home two of the three silver medals won by Jamaica, while Shantae Foreman in the women’s triple jump and Llyodrica Cameron in the women’s shot put secured two of the five bronze medals won by Jamaica.

The final medal was added to Jamaica’s overall tally when the Sunshine Girls won the silver medal on the netball court on Sunday morning, a day after shocking Australia in the semi-final.

Jamaica finished eighth on the combined multi-sports table with a final tally of 19 medals in total — 10 gold, four silver and five bronze.

This came after the Sunshine Girls lost 56-48 to New Zealand in the gold medal match, which was the second meeting between the two teams in the space of seven days.

Jamaica’s veteran goal shooter, Romelda Aiken-George, led the shooting for Jamaica with 32 goals from 36 attempts, while Shanice Beckford supported with 16 goals from 18 tries.
