Tajay Gayle secures gold for Jamaica at Commonwealth Games

Jamaica’s medal tally improved to four at the Commonwealth Games following a gold medal performance by 2019 world champion Tajay Gayle and a podium finish from shot putter Lydorica Cameron earlier today.

 

 

Gayle captured gold in the men’s long jump with a leap of 8.15 metres. His teammate, Jordan Turner, finished ninth with a best mark of 7.65 metres.

Meanwhile, Cameron secured the bronze medal in the women’s shot put with a throw of 17.87 metres. Canada’s Sarah Mitton claimed gold with a winning effort of 19.88 metres.

Jamaica’s other two gold medals at the Games came earlier this week through Demario Prince in the men’s 110-metre hurdles and Romaine Beckford in the men’s high jump.

Jamaica now sits 10th on the medal table with three gold medals and one bronze.

Meanwhile, on the third day of track and field competition, Kelly Ann Beckford became the latest Jamaican to advance on the track, finishing third in her women’s 800-metre semi-final in 1 minute 59.96 seconds to book her place in Friday’s final.

The other Jamaican in the event, Adelle Tracey, narrowly missed out on a place in the final after finishing fourth in semi-final two in 2 minutes 1.54 seconds.

Also advancing was Assinie Wilson, who finished second in heat three of the men’s 400-metre hurdles in 49.19 seconds.

Earlier today, Lavanya Williams, Alana Reid, Christopher Taylor, Roshawn Clarke and Jevaughn Powell were among the Jamaicans progressing to the semi-finals of their respective 200-metre events.

Williams won her heat in 22.91 seconds, while Reid also claimed victory in her heat in 22.95 seconds.

In the men’s first round, Christopher Taylor finished second in his heat in 20.36 seconds, Roshawn Clarke won his heat in 20.56 seconds, and Jevaughn Powell also topped his heat in 20.28 seconds.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls moved to the top of Pool B with their third win in four matches, edging Scotland 45-43 in the netball competition.

Azara Wilmot led the scoring for the Sunshine Girls with 28 goals from 35 attempts, while Shanice Beckford added 15 goals from 18 attempts.

Pool B leaders New Zealand remained unbeaten after cruising past Wales 65-37.

The Sunshine Girls return to action tomorrow against Wales at 1:00 p.m. Jamaica time.
