Cabinet has approved the Artificial Intelligence Proficiency, Ethics and Expertise (APEX) for government programme.

It will be a mandatory programme for those using AI in the public service, aimed at promoting the responsible and ethical use of related tools.

The disclosure was made by Technology Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley at a post Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday.

Dr. Wheatley said the use of AI is moving faster than rules, placing the government’s data at risk.

He explained that public officers are using AI systems without guidance on what government information should be placed on these systems, how results should be checked and analyzed, as well as who should be held accountable if something goes wrong.

The Minister said all public sector workers who wish to, or are using AI must participate in the APEX programme.

He said the first training session for the programme will begin before the end of this fiscal year.

The programme will then run continuously to support the training of workers in new AI tools as they are developed.
