Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay Michael Belnavis has called on the nation to recognise the work of the Constabulary Force, noting that officers constantly put their lives on the line to protect citizens.
He made the statement as he reflected on the recent deaths of two police officers during a police operation in Sligoville, St. Catherine.
Three men were also fatally shot during the incident.
In offering condolences to the family and friends of the deceased officers, the Mayor highlighted the work of the police in protecting citizens from criminals and even persons of unsound mind.
He urged citizens to denounce stories being circulated on social media which appear to blame the police for the fatal shooting incident.
He was speaking at the St. Ann Municipal Corporation’s Heroes’ Day Civic and Award ceremony on Sunday.
Mayor Belnavis called for a moment of silence to be observed for the fallen officers.
