“This is unconscionable!”

That remark from President of the Small Business Association of Jamaica, Garnett Reid, as he raises concern over the National Water Commission’s (NWC’s) decision to ask the Office of Utilities Regulations (OUR) for a 51 per cent tariff increase.

During yesterday’s meeting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Acting President of the Commission, Kevin Kerr, announced that the NWC submitted its request last Friday.

According to Mr. Kerr, the move will place the Commission in a position to meet its expenses.

The NWC is reportedly drowning in a 33.2 billion dollar debt, which has impeded growth.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, Mr. Reid said, given the pressures on businesses following Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, a tariff increase will only add further burden.

Mr. Kerr has said public engagements will take place before any tariff increase is implemented.

The OUR, which confirmed receipt of the increase request, said it will conduct an initial assessment to determine whether or not the application meets the acceptance requirements for the conduct of a tariff review, both in respect of form and content.

It should convey its decision to the NWC within 10 days.
