The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) is warning Jamaicans to be on high alert for a fraudulent message circulating on social media and other messaging platforms, promising a $15,000 cash gift from the government.

It claims that Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has announced cash payment for all Jamaicans in celebration of National Heroes’ Day.

In a statement, the OPM made it clear that the fraudulent message, which invites recipients to click a link to claim the purported cash gift, is entirely false and appears designed to exploit the public’s trust.

The OPM is urging members of the public to avoid clicking the link, refrain from providing personal or financial information, as well as to not forward the message to others.

It expressed concern about continued efforts by unscrupulous individuals to mislead unsuspecting citizens, through fabricated announcements, false promises of financial assistance and unauthorised use of names of public officials.

The OPM is reminding citizens that official announcements concerning government programmes, financial assistance, grants or other public benefits are communicated through established government channels, including the official websites and verified social media platforms of the relevant ministries, departments and agencies.

Members of the public are encouraged to exercise vigilance and independently verify any information purporting to originate from the prime minister or the government, particularly where such information involves the promise of money or requests that individuals follow unfamiliar links.

Persons who have already clicked the link are being encouraged to avoid entering any information.

Anyone who has disclosed banking details, passwords or other sensitive information should immediately contact the relevant financial institution or service provider and report the incident to the appropriate authorities.
