ODPEM begins distributing emergency supplies ahead of 2026 hurricane season

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has begun distribution of key items to the local authorities for pre-positioning, as the country maintains its preparedness for the 2026 hurricane season.

This was disclosed by the Director General of ODPEM, Commander Alvin Gayle.

He was responding to concerns raised by Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Julian Robinson, about the readiness of shelters, pointing to issues during Hurricane Melissa last October.

Mr. Robinson called for a review of how shelters are equipped ahead of a hurricane.

Commander Gayle indicated measures being undertaken, including a focus on the shelter regulations, discussions with the local authorities and the distribution of items.

The ODPEM Director General told the committee of other actions being taken including, training of shelter managers, noting he anticipates better management of shelters.
