Opposition says reduction in murders does not equate to peace

“fearfulness cannot be translated to peacefulness.”

That remark from opposition spokesman on national security and peace Fitz Jackson, as he noted that the nation’s current reduction in murders this year does not equate to Jamaica being a peaceful society.

Speaking with Irie F M News, Mr. Jackson pointed to the uptick in fatal shootings by the police which he says have increased fear levels among many innocent citizens.

He stresses that while he welcomes the current reductions in the murder rate, it should not be achieved at any cost.

Following the publication of the 2026 Global Peace Index by the Institute for Economics and Peace the government acknowledged that it has much more work to do to ensure that Jamaica is a safe place to live, work and conduct business.

It has also lauded the efforts of the security forces amidst the 24% reduction in murders this year, when compared to last year.
