Justice minister explains that under the law reasonable force by police includes deadly force

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has pointed out that under the law reasonable force by the police includes, deadly force.

His comment comes amidst calls for police officers to use body-worn cameras in light of concern about the up-tick in fatal shootings.

The latest incident to attract national attention is the killing of Lotoya Bulgin in Granville, St. James, on Sunday, May 17.

Speaking at an Alternative Dispute Resolution policy development and estate planning forum in Trelawny yesterday, Mr. Chuck stressed, that the police can use reasonable force to arrest a felon.

Mr. Chuck said force can be deadly under certain circumstances.

Mr. Chuck lamented that the police should not have to resort to using extra force to make arrests.

In appealing to people to desist from resisting arrest the minister said aggrieved people who feel they were falsely detained can seek redress through the courts.
