CISOCA highlights increased reports of sexual crimes against children, saying many incidents start with interactions on social media

There is a growing number of reports of sexual crimes against children and many of the incidents originate from interactions on social media platforms.

The Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) made the disclosure during the police’s “Force for Food” Podcast yesterday.

Quality Assurance Officer, Inspector Cherise Johnson noted that victims include children as young as 10 years old.

Her colleague, Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector, Debbia Jennings explained that after meeting the perpetrator online, children then arrange to meet them in person.

This, then leads to the sexual assault.

In light of these realties, Detective Inspector Jennings is urging parents to understand the critical role they play in safeguarding their children online.

She also stressed that accountability extends beyond the household.

Reports can be made by contacting the 24-hour child abuse reporting hotline at 211, crime stop at 311, or the police emergency number 119.
