Gov’t ramping up efforts to position Jamaica as strong competitor in the global cannabis industry

The government is ramping up efforts to position Jamaica as a strong competitor in the global cannabis industry, actively partnering with international stakeholders to expand market access.

State Minister for Industry, Investment and Commerce, Delano Seiveright made the disclosure during the official Launch of the Medicinal Cannabis Special Permit Programmes yesterday.

The launch is being seen as significant, as it signals a shift from a largely informal industry to a more structured and legitimized sector.

Mr. Seiveright said with Jamaica maintaining high standards and strong quality control, it could help local products reach wider international markets.

He further stressed that the industry must be inclusive and underscored the role of education and research in unlocking its full potential while ensuring strong regulatory oversight and integrity.

He noted that these amendments create new, sustainable business opportunities beyond traditional industries, while supporting emerging roles in the cannabis value chain.
