Concerns mount over structural integrity of Westmoreland Bridge in St. Mary
Concerns are growing about the structural integrity of the Westmoreland Bridge at Chovey/Georgia in St. Mary.
This follows similar concerns raised by Member of Parliament for St. Mary South Eastern, Christopher Brown, on Wednesday that mining activity in the vicinity of the bridge is threatening the structure.
When IRIE FM News visited the area yesterday, a retaining wall on the road approaching the bridge was observed to be partially collapsed.
Cracks could also be seen on the roadway.
Councillor of the Belfield Division, Leevan Freeman, who visited the area yesterday, believes that mining is being done too close to the bridge, posing a threat to the bridge.
He is calling on the relevant authorities to take action.
Meanwhile, a taxi operator, who identified himself as Teddy, who plies the Highgate to Annotto Bay route, also voiced concerns about the situation.
He is also urging the authorities to address the matter.
A resident of the area – who gave his name as Keith – described the situation as very dangerous.
