Gov’t says it has no confirmed report of inappropriate behaviour by shelterees at schools, calls on JTA President to provide evidence

The Education Ministry has stated that it has no confirmed report of inappropriate behaviour by shelterees at schools.

This in the wake of claims by Jamaica Teachers’ Association President Mark Malabver yesterday who alleged among other things that some shelteeres were engaging in sexual acts in clear view of students.

There are 81 persons being accommodated at schools across eight shelter sites.

The JTA President is not in support of the classes being held while persons occupy school premises.

Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon pointed out that checks were made with regional officers, school principals and shelter managers.

They all indicated that no such report was made.

The Education Ministry said it meets with the JTA on a monthly basis and these specific allegations were never raised in those meetings.

Additionally, the ministry said it was not made aware of the serious content of the public utterances of the JTA President prior to his statements at the association’s conference yesterday.

Dr. Morris Dixon expressed shock at the public allegations made by the JTA President, pointing out that he should have made formal reports of the claims first.

She said the ministry has a moral and statutory responsibility to report and investigate these allegations.
