Efforts underway to provide psycho-social support to elderly man in viral police confrontation

Plans are being made to provide psycho-social support to the elderly man who was seen in a viral video in a physical confrontation with a police officer.

The incident, which reportedly happened in Tawes Pen, St. Catherine, has led to the officer’s interdiction, pending the outcome of a thorough probe by the Inspectorate and Professional Oversight Bureau.

It also prompted a statement from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, which noted that it does not condone any form of misconduct or abuse of authority by its members.

The Constabulary also sought to assure that the actions depicted in the video do not reflect the professional standards and core values upheld by the organization.

Reacting to the incident, Seniors Advocate and founder of the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons (CCRP), Jean Lowrie-Chin told IRIE FM News that she understands the elderly man has been traumatized by the situation.

Mrs. Lowrie-Chin said her organization will be partnering with the National Council for Senior Citizens to help him.

She said the incident also highlighted the need for additional training and counselling sessions for some members of the police force.
