Education Ministry unable to account for over 300 students, following hurricane Melissa

The Education Ministry is unable to account for over 300 students, following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October.

The Ministry indicates that this is an improvement as the figure stood at over 1,000 when schools resumed in January.

Chairman of the Education Transformation Oversight Committee (E-TOC) Dr. Adrian Stokes, says while the majority of students have returned to formal learning environments the matter is of concern as the Ministry seeks to ensure that no child is left behind.

In the meantime, Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry Dr. Kasan Troupe, says several efforts are underway to locate the students who have not returned to school .

She explains that one challenge is that when representatives go into the field, community members are not aware of the registered names of the students as they are known to them by their aliases.

Dr. Troupe adds that the Ministry needs to do more to track students who have relocated.

She is also appealing to community members to share the information when they encounter students who are not in school.
