Chief Justice Brian Sykes declares that the courts are not revenue collecting agencies
Chief Justice Brian Sykes has declared that the courts are not revenue collecting agencies and that judges are not seeking to meet revenue targets.
The government has indicated that it intends to collect one billion dollars in traffic fines in the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
Justice Sykes said the traffic ticket public days organized by the Court Administration Division CAD were planned before any indication of the government’s revenue targets.
The next one is scheduled for St. Catherine on March 4.
The CAD has indicated that the initiative aims to help motorists resolve long-standing traffic ticket matters before warrants are executed, while also supporting the judiciary’s efforts to reduce case backlogs in the parish courts.
Justice Sykes emphasised that motorists should not believe that they will be pressured to plead guilty for traffic breaches.
