Chief Justice Bryan Sykes has highlighted conditions at some of the island’s court houses, especially in western Jamaica, post hurricane Melissa, noting the urgent need to ensure the public’s access to justice.

This was a major part of a renewed call for the judiciary to have greater control over its budget.

Speaking today at a media engagement put on by the Court Administration Division, the Chief Justice noted that he has not seen any indication that the Justice Ministry has activated emergency procurement to have the rehabilitation works undertaken.

He pointed to the efforts being made by judges in Westmoreland.

Justice Sykes called for better funding for the judiciary to respond to natural disasters like hurricane Melissa.

Noting that 9 court houses are located near coasts, Justice Sykes said if another hurricane hits, the judiciary must have access to funds to effect its own response.
