NWC reports revenue loss of over $3B following passage of Hurricane Melissa

The National Water Commission (NWC) is reporting a revenue loss of over $3 billion following the passage of Hurricane Melissa in October last year.

Acting Vice President of Operations at the NWC, Herman Fagan, made the revelation during today’s meeting of the Public Administration and Appropriation Committee.

He pointed to the hurricane’s impact on the hotel sector as a major reason for the loss.

Several hotels have shuttered their doors to facilitate rehabilitation after the Category 5 storm.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fagan added that the company suffered damage amounting to nearly $4 billion.

Mr. Fagan also highlighted additional costs, which are impacting the water company’s budget, such as those relating to the rehabilitation of NWC’s buildings, generator fuel and maintenance, security and emergency works.

He noted, however, that assistance has come from the Central Government and NWC’s insurance providers. The insurance payout represents over US$2 million.
