Consultant psychiatrist warns children affected by Hurricane Melissa may face long-term developmental, mental health damage

Consultant psychiatrist Professor Wendel Abel has warned that children affected by Hurricane Melissa may face long-term developmental and mental health damage, including an increased risk of self-harm if their trauma is not addressed.

Speaking on day three of the National Health Research Conference yesterday, Professor Abel said the psychological impact of the Category 5 storm on children is being under-estimated, particularly by those who view the disaster as a one-off event.

Professor Abel said untreated trauma in children can result in growth delays, attention and memory problems, as well as reduced academic performance.

He warned that these challenges do not simply disappear with time and, if not properly managed, can escalate into more serious outcomes later in life.
