King, Campbell stand firm as Windies openers post rare century partnership at Bay Oval
Jamaica’s opening pair of Brandon King and John Campbell showed welcome resolve as the West Indies closed day two of the third and final Test against New Zealand on 110 without loss at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Thursday.
King and Campbell, in fine nick under testing conditions, put together their first century partnership as an opening pair and just the sixth opening stand of 100 or more for the Windies in the last 11 years. Despite the encouraging start, the visitors remain deep in trouble, trailing the home side by a daunting 465 runs after New Zealand declared on a mammoth total earlier in the day.
King continued his steady progress at Test level, bringing up his second half-century in the format. The right-hander struck nine boundaries in an unbeaten 55 from 78 balls, while Campbell played solid support, finishing the day 45 not out after hitting seven fours.

Earlier, New Zealand resumed on 334 for one and piled on the runs before declaring at 575 for eight — their fifth-highest Test total at home. The innings was highlighted by a masterclass from Devon Conway, who converted his overnight 178 into a commanding double century. Conway was eventually dismissed for 227 after facing 227 balls and striking 31 boundaries, falling to Justin Greaves.
The Windies bowling effort was hampered by the absence of experienced pacer Kemar Roach, who missed the day’s play with a hamstring injury, while Greaves also had to step away briefly during the day. Despite those setbacks, the visitors managed to claim seven wickets, with Greaves leading the way with figures of two for 23. Anderson Phillip picked up two for 154, Jayden Seales claimed one for 63, and captain Roston Chase returned one for 159.
Scores: New Zealand 575 for 8 declared; West Indies 110 without loss.
