Gov’t identifies raft of infrastructure changes to improve Jamaica’s resilience to future weather/ climate shocks

As rehabilitative works continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, the Government has identified a raft of infrastructure changes to improve Jamaica’s resilience to future weather or climate shocks.

Works Minister Robert Morgan noted that following the category 5 hurricane, the National Works Agency (NWA) conducted preliminary assessments which revealed several weaknesses in the country’s secondary and rural roads.

He stressed the importance of slope protection and improvements in the drainage systems, as some of the strategies to be implemented to address the problems.

He also noted that future strategies include real-time mapping and monitoring of areas which have been classified as vulnerable.
