Educators grappling with trauma in the wake of Hurricane Melissa; JTA calls for support
Though schools have begun to reopen, educators and administrators are reportedly grappling with trauma in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
Several schools, especially in Kingston and St. Andrew opened today, with principals meeting with staff members.
Assessments are being conducted.
IRIE FM News understands that at least one Kingston principal, who resides in St. Ann, was severely impacted by the hurricane.
That principal is still trying to mobilize support for students and staff in Kingston.
Speaking with IRIE FM News, President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Mark Malabver, said many of the teachers are overwhelmed as they suffered tremendous loss.
He said some of the teachers are unable to contact their relatives, a worrying factor, as they try to carry out their professional duties.
Mr. Malabver says teachers and administrators need Jamaica’s support at this time.
