The death toll from hurricane Melissa has climbed to 28.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said the government is deeply saddened to confirm 28 fatalities associated with the passage of hurricane Melissa.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the Jamaica Defence force (JDF) and the Ministry of Health & Wellness are coordinating the recovery and verification process.

There are additional reports of possible fatalities that are still being verified.

The Government says it will provide further updates as verification progresses and recovery operations advance in the coming days.

The Government has extended heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and communities mourning their loved ones.
