Met Service warns that Melissa remains a powerful storm whether it’s a category 5 or 4
Head of the Met Service Evan Thompson said while it is expected that Melissa will drop to category four before making landfall, the island must still make preparations for a category five.
He said after making landfall Melissa will then move towards the north eastern end of the country and will exit in the vicinity of St. Ann.
The Principal Director says Hurricane Melissa will bring heavy rains and winds islandwide regardless of where landfall is made.
Speaking at a press briefing this morning, Mr. Thompson noted that though Melissa is projected to make landfall in the south western end of the island, those who are on the eastern end will not escape.
He said this is due to the projected path of the system which is expected to head in a north easterly direction after moving over south western parishes.
Mr. Thompson sought to assure citizens that this is not the end, noting that Melissa is expected to weaken when she moves off the sea.
