Jamaica expected to begin experiencing impacts of Tropical Storm Melissa as early as tomorrow; rainfall expected to cover most of the island

Jamaica is expected to begin experiencing the impacts of Tropical Storm Melissa as early as tomorrow, with rainfall expected to cover most of the island.

Principal Director of the Meteorological Service Evan Thompson made the disclosure during a press briefing at Jamaica House today.

He noted that eastern parishes and southern sections of the island are most at risk.

With Jamaica already experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few weeks, Mr. Thompson said citizens should expect flooding to occur.

This as soil saturation will be reached very quickly.

He also noted that strong winds are expected late on Thursday.

At 10:00 a.m., Tropical Storm Melissa was about 478 kilometres (298 miles) southeast of Morant Point,
Jamaica or about 525 kilometres (325 miles) southeast of the capital Kingston.
