Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce officially announces retirement after 18-year career
Jamaican sprint icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has officially announced her retirement from athletics, bringing the curtain down on a stellar 18-year career that saw her win 25 global medals, including three Olympic golds and 10 World Championship titles.
The multiple World and Olympic champion made the announcement via her social media pages on Tuesday, confirming that her competitive journey on the track has come to an end after nearly two decades at the pinnacle of the sport.
Fraser-Pryce had hinted earlier in the year that the 2025 National Championships would be her final appearance at the Jamaican trials and that the World Championships would mark her last international competition. However, until now, she had stopped short of making a definitive statement about retirement.
In her heartfelt message, the 37-year-old reflected on the joy and fulfillment athletics has brought her since her early days growing up in Waterhouse, St. Andrew.
“This sport has given me joy beyond measure. It has shaped me, disciplined me, and carried me to heights I could only dream of as a young girl in Waterhouse,” Fraser-Pryce wrote.
“Yet as I reflect, I no longer see time only in seconds — I see it in years. The years I gave to sprinting will forever remain among the greatest joys of my life.”
Affectionately known as the “Pocket Rocket,” Fraser-Pryce retires as one of the most decorated female sprinters in history. Her achievements include back-to-back Olympic 100m titles in 2008 and 2012, along with a glittering haul of World Championship medals, where she dominated the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay for over a decade.
Despite closing this chapter, Fraser-Pryce emphasized that her journey is far from over.
“I know my race is not finished; it is simply a lane change,” she said.
“This new chapter is about passing on the lessons the sport has given me, using my voice to advocate for others, and helping the next generation to shine even brighter. Sprinting gave me a global stage, but faith gives a greater mission.”
Fraser-Pryce also paid tribute to her family for their sacrifices and support throughout her remarkable career — one that began as a teenage prodigy and evolved into a legacy defined by resilience, consistency, and excellence.
