Over 300 people killed in road crashes since the start of the year
Three hundred and two (302) people have been killed in road crashes since the start of the year.
The latest incident occurred yesterday in St Elizabeth, where two men died following a motorcycle collision.
The crash happened around 5:20 P.M., along the Mount Plymouth Main Road.
Dead are 31-year-old Rushane smith, otherwise called “Chicky”, of Smoothland district in Santa Cruz and 17-year-old Romario Rowe, also known as “Fatta”, of 7 Corners District, also in Santa Cruz.
Reports indicate that both men were driving motorcycles in opposite directions when they collided.
The police were alerted and the injured men were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Just a day earlier, at about 10:30 P.M., 25-year-old Andre Thompson of Pimento Walk in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, was killed in a motorcycle crash.
Reports are that Thompson lost control of his motorcycle which crashed into a wall near the Methodist Church gate in Ocho Rios.
Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Dr. Lucien Jones has expressed concern that the majority of road fatalities involve motorcyclists.
He noted that the national helmet wearing coalition is intensifying its efforts to promote the consistent use of helmets among riders.
Dr. Jones also mentioned ongoing programmes aimed at training motorcyclists in safe riding practices.
