HWT Transport Centre to engage principals in getting more students to utilize rural school buses

The management of the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre has signalled plans to engage with school principals to determine how to persuade more students to travel on the recently launched rural school buses.

The vehicles were rolled out on September 8, as students returned to classes for the new academic year.

They are part of the Government’s initiative to make transportation easier, safer and more cost-effective for students.

Those students who travel on the buses have been doing so free of cost, as arranged by the Government.

They will continue to enjoy free transportation until the end of this month.

However, General Manager for the Centre, Keith Blake told IRIE FM News that despite the free bus rides, some students have opted not to take advantage of this mode of transportation.

He said, although the Education Ministry has been in discussions with principals about the school buses, increased efforts by the Centre will be made to help address students’ refusal to commute through this method.

Mr. Blake also pointed to several incidents and altercations involving students at the Centre.

He believes that if more of them travel on the scheduled buses, fewer incidents will occur.
