West Indies are on the back foot after a difficult opening day in the first Test against India in Ahmedabad, where they were bundled out for 162 in just 44.1 overs.

Having lost the toss and asked to bat, the Caribbean side struggled against a relentless Indian attack. Justin Greaves top-scored with 32, while Shai Hope added 26 and captain Roston Chase chipped in with 24.

For India, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was the chief destroyer with figures of 4 for 40, ably supported by Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed 3 for 42.

In reply, the hosts closed the day strongly at 121 for 2, just 41 runs shy of the West Indies’ first innings total with eight wickets still intact. Lokesh Rahul is unbeaten on 53, sharing an unbroken third-wicket stand of 30 with skipper Shubman Gill, who is not out on 18.

Earlier, Jayden Seales provided a breakthrough for the West Indies when he dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 36, while Chase accounted for Sai Sudharsan, who made 7.

The second day’s play resumes tonight at 11:00 p.m. Jamaica time, with India firmly in control of the contest.
