Agriculture Ministry working to increase Jamaica’s domestic production to one million tonnes by 2028

The Agriculture Ministry says it is working to increase Jamaica’s domestic production to one million tonnes by 2028.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, portfolio minister Floyd Green said the production target is one of several strategies being implemented to ensure Jamaica’s food security.

Mr. Green also noted that the move is part of efforts to reduce the country’s food import bill.

In the April to June quarter of this year, the nation’s farmers produced approximately 232,000 tonnes.

This represents a 13.7 per cent growth, which has occurred despite sector-related challenges, including Hurricane Beryl, which ravaged the island last year.

Mr. Green, who noted that Jamaica achieved over 700,000 tonnes of domestic production last year, is expecting that figure to increase by the end of 2025.

This, as his Ministry remains committed to building out the agriculture sector.
