Bennett and Mason deliver silver and bronze as Jamaica’s medal hunt heats up in Tokyo
Jamaica’s medal tally at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo rose to five today, thanks to standout performances from sprint hurdlers Orlando Bennett and Tyler Mason on day four of competition.
Both athletes produced their fastest times ever to secure podium finishes. Bennett clocked a splendid 13.08 seconds to claim silver, finishing just behind American Cordell Tinch, who won in 12.99 seconds. Mason equalled the personal best he set in the semifinals, 13.12 seconds, to take bronze and round out a memorable race for Jamaica.
Their achievements lifted the nation’s tally to one gold, three silver, and one bronze, with several more athletes lining up as medal contenders.
In the women’s triple jump, Olympic silver medallist Shanieka Ricketts leapt 14.30 metres to qualify for the medal round, where she will be joined by Ackelia Smith, who also advanced.
On the track, Nickesha Pryce stormed into the women’s 400 metres final with a season’s best 49.46 seconds, delivering one of the standout runs of the day. Her teammates Dejanae Oakley and Stacey-Ann Williams, however, did not advance.
In the men’s 400 metres, national record holder Rusheen McDonald produced his best performance of the season—44.04 seconds—to book his spot in the final. He was the lone Jamaican to progress from the trio that lined up in the semifinals.
