There were dramatic scenes along Caledonia Road in Mandeville, Manchester today, as a gunman engaged police in a shoot-out for almost 4 hours, before he was fatally shot.

Police have not released the identity of the deceased, who is suspected to have murdered an unidentified man in the area at about 7:30 this morning.

Preliminary reports are that the man was in his car, when he was shot by a gunman.

The wounded man reportedly tried to operate the vehicle which crashed in the process.

Head of the Manchester Police, Superintendent Carey Duncan said the man was taken to hospital where he succumbed.

He said lawmen launched an operation and were challenged by an armed man.

Superintendent Duncan said a police officer and 2 service vehicles were hit in the exchange of gunfire.

He added that investigators will probe reports that the murder stemmed from a dispute over eggs.
