EOJ says ROPA would have to be amended to allow elderly & persons with disabilities to vote on separate day

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown said any changes to how various sets of electors cast their ballots will have to be enacted by the country’s lawmakers.

He was reacting to calls for the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) to implement a separate voting day for the elderly and persons with disabilities.

The issue resurfaced following Wednesday’s general election.

While the general report is that the voting process for these two groups went smoothly, there were some instances of concern, especially for electors with disabilities.

The EOJ already has mechanisms in place to facilitate members of the two groups, who go to polling stations to vote.

These persons are classified as part of the general population.

By law, the only separated groups are election day workers and the security forces, who vote days before election day.

Mr. Brown said if the elderly and persons with disabilities are to be included in the separated groups, an amendment to the Representation of the People Act (ROPA) will have to be made by the legislature.
