Johnson’s stoppage-time heroics hand Racing United second straight win in JPL

Racing United maintained their perfect start to the 2025 Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League season with a dramatic 2-1 win away to Waterhouse on Sunday.

The Portmore-based club, fresh off a 5-1 opening-day demolition of Arnett Gardens, were forced to dig deep against a stubborn Waterhouse outfit reduced to 10 men. With the game tied 1-1 deep into stoppage time, substitute Deandre Johnson stepped up as the hero, heading home the winner in the 94th minute to seal all three points.

The match had swung back and forth after Tajay Grant gave Racing the lead in the 37th minute. But just three minutes after the restart, Marcovich Brown turned the ball into his own net to hand Waterhouse an unlikely lifeline. Despite the setback, Racing pushed forward and were rewarded with Johnson’s late winner, a goal that keeps them top of the table on goal difference.

Also on six points are Chapelton Maroons, who continued their strong start with a 2-0 win over Harbour View at Stadium East. Marcos Filho struck in the 41st minute, before Carlton Brown doubled the advantage early in the second half to secure victory for the Clarendon outfit.

At the Dunbeholden Sports Complex, Nicholas Nelson proved the difference-maker, netting in the 86th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 win over newly promoted Spanish Town Police. Meanwhile, Tivoli Gardens and Portmore United battled to a goalless draw in Kingston.

The round of fixtures concludes on Monday with a mouthwatering clash at Sabina Park, where two-time defending champions Cavalier host Arnett Gardens at 4:00 p.m. Fans in the west will also be treated to a double-header at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex: last season’s beaten finalists Mount Pleasant face Molynes United at 5:00 p.m., before Montego Bay United welcome newcomers Treasure Beach at 7:30.
