JUTC says its partnership with the police has proven fruitful so far in dissuading perpetrators from vandalising its buses

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says its partnership with the police has proven fruitful so far in dissuading perpetrators from vandalising its buses.

At least 10 JUTC buses were damaged in a spate of stone throwing incidents in St. Catherine as well as Kingston and St. Andrew last month.

The situation prompted several warnings from the police, and resulted in the launch of a coordinated response by the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the JUTC.

The response includes heightened mobile and static points along vulnerable routes, especially in known hotspots, as well as strategic covert deployments to detect and apprehend perpetrators in real time.

There will also be monthly reviews on the effectiveness of the partnership’s mitigation measures.

In an update to IRIE FM News, JUTC’s Corporate Communications Manager, Shantole Thompson said since the partnership, there has been no report of vandalism.

She said she hopes the situation will remain the same as time progresses.

At least one person – a minor – was taken into custody in relation to the stoning incidents.
