Opposition spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, has described yesterday’s mishaps involving recently acquired school buses as “red flags” indicating the struggles these vehicles will face navigating rural roadways.

The buses were being tested along 30 routes, in all three counties yesterday but footage posted to social media showed that the tests did not go without challenges.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz reported that there were two incidents related to blown-out tyres and one or two minor road mishaps.

He also noted that drivers will have to get accustomed to navigating difficult terrains.

Mr. Vaz has pledged that all issues will be addressed in time for a seamless rollout when the new academic year starts in September.

However, Mr. Phillips said there are serious safety concerns.

According to the Opposition Spokesman, a People’s National Party-led Government would ensure a safer bus system, which would cater to 20,000 students a day.

The buses are to be tested on 92 more routes before the school year begins.
