Lausanne Diamond League set for star-studded sprint showdown between Thompson, Seville & Lyles

The men’s 100 metres at the upcoming Lausanne Diamond League Meeting (Athletissima) is shaping up to be a sprinting spectacle reminiscent of an Olympic or World Championship final. Organizers have unveiled a stacked line-up that promises fireworks on August 20, as the world’s best sprinters prepare to clash in one of the most anticipated races of the season.

Leading the charge is Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, the Olympic silver medallist and current world leader, who will be joined by his compatriot Oblique Seville, another rising force in global sprinting. They’ll face stiff competition from the reigning World and Olympic champion, Noah Lyles, who won the 200m at the U.S Trials on Sunday.

Adding further intrigue is Kenny Bednarek, the double Olympic silver medallist over 200 metres, fresh off his victory in the 100 metres at the U.S. Trials last Saturday. The star-studded field also includes Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs, the Tokyo 2021 Olympic 100m champion, Courtney Lindsey, who finished second to Bednarek at the American Championships.

Swiss sprint fans will be eager to see Timothé Mumenthaler, the reigning European 200m champion, who will be looking to make his mark on home soil.

The electrifying sprint battle comes just four days after Thompson and Lyles are scheduled to go head-to-head in Silesia, Poland, setting up a tantalizing back-to-back showdown between the world’s fastest men.

The spotlight in Lausanne won’t be limited to the men. In the women’s 200 metres, Shericka Jackson, Jamaica’s back-to-back World champion, will take on a stellar field. Among her challengers are Gabby Thomas, the Olympic champion from the United States, Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, the 2019 World champion, and Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred, the reigning Olympic 100m gold medallist.

The 110m hurdles is also set to deliver drama, with Cordell Tinch, the season leader with a blistering 12.87, entering as the favourite. He’ll be joined by fellow American Trey Cunningham, Spain’s Henrique Llopis, and Just Kwaou-Mathey, who sent shockwaves through the athletics world by clocking 12.99 at the French Championships—2025’s second-fastest time. Switzerland’s own Jason Joseph, the national record holder, will be a strong medal contender in front of his home crowd.

The women’s high jump will feature Ukrainian world record holder and Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh headlining a field that includes top Australian rivals Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson, as well as Serbia’s rising star Angelina Topic.

The Athletissima meet is the third-to-last stop on the 2025 Wanda Diamond League series.
