Gov’t says UK’s decision to repeal Fixed-term Parliament Act prompted Jamaica to reconsider implementing similar law

The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has suggested that the United Kingdom’s decision to repeal a legislation for fixed election dates has prompted Jamaica to reconsider implementing a similar law.

During his 2016 election campaign, the then Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, promised to commence legislative processes to establish a fixed election, within the first 100 days if the JLP formed the next administration.

Speaking on the matter at a press conference yesterday, Chair of the JLP’s Manifesto and Achievements Committee, Kamina Johnson Smith, pointed out that the UK repealed its law, due to a conflict with that nation’s constitutional traditions.

She stressed that those traditions are similar to those upheld in Jamaica.

She also said the decision not to implement fixed election dates will not affect the trust Jamaicans have in the JLP.
