ODPEM to add provision of ice & igloos to standard hurricane response package
Local Government minister Desmond McKenzie has indicated that the government will be adding the provision of igloos and ice to its standard response package in the event of another storm.
McKenzie noted that following the passage of hurricane Beryl last year, many citizens in southern parishes were without electricity.
This meant that the residents, especially fisher folk, had challenges with keeping meat and fish.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) distributed igloos and ice to affected residents.
McKenzie noted that this initiative was welcomed, and having noted the necessity, it will be offered again, in the event that the country is hit by another storm.
The minister added that the government will also be distributing hurricane straps, free of cost, to residents.
The straps help prevent the roofs of homes from being blown off during a storm.
