Mercia Fraser, the mother of Mario Deane, is still hurting and finding it hard to come to terms with the sentences handed down to the police officers convicted in the case of her son’s death.

On Tuesday, the Westmoreland Court sentenced Corporal Elaine Stewart to five years for manslaughter, misconduct in a public office, and perverting the course of justice. She was granted bail, pending appeal.

While, District Constables Marlon Grant and Juliana Clevon were given suspended sentences, on charges of manslaughter and misconduct, meaning that they will not serve any prison time unless another offence is committed.

Speaking with IRIE FM’s Mutabaruka on the Stepping Razor Show today, Ms. Fraser lamented that all 3 cops are still able to go about their daily lives and interact with family and friends, while she will never see her son again.

She is disappointed that her son died, after he was taken into custody for a minor offence, noting that those responsible should be held accountable for the major offence of manslaughter.
