It’s a slap in the face but it’s better than nothing!”- SUFJ on Gov’t being ordered to pay $120M to man imprisoned for 50 years without trial
“It’s a slap in the face, but it’s better than nothing!”
That’s the reaction from human rights lobby group, Stand Up for Jamaica (SUFJ), following today’s Supreme Court ruling, which has ordered the Government to pay $120 million in damages to a mentally ill man who spent 50 years in prison without a trial.
George Williams was imprisoned in 1970 on a murder charge and remained there until June 2020, despite being deemed unfit to plead.
SUFJ advocated for Mr. Williams’ release, and has been providing him and his family with emotional, financial and logistical support.
Speaking with IRIE FM News, SUF’s Administrator Katrian Clarke said though the payout is disappointing, she is grateful that something has happened.
Ms. Clarke said she hopes the money will be handed over soon to Mr. Williams, who is now 76 years old.
The Government’s expected payout includes $78.6 million for compensatory damages and $42 million for vindicatory damages.
