Divers deployed to assist in search for 11 Y/O boy washed out to sea in Westmoreland

Divers have been deployed to assist in the search for an 11-year-old boy who was washed out to sea during inclement weather in Westmoreland yesterday.

The grade 5 New Hope Primary student reportedly fell into a gutter, while making his way home after school  and was swept out to sea.

The search for him began yesterday and was called off last evening due to poor visibility.

It resumed today, but up to news time, the boy was still not found.

In a statement this afternoon, the Education Ministry expressed sadness at the incident.

It said upon being alerted, its emergency response protocols were activated swiftly.

The ministry said it has been working in close collaboration with the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard in search and recovery operations.

Portfolio Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon, said the ministry is mobilising all necessary support to assist in the ongoing efforts and stand ready to provide psychosocial services for those affected.

She is also encouraging students, especially those in flood-prone areas, to follow all safety guidelines during the hurricane season.

The ministry said it is in contact with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and local authorities as the situation unfolds.

As the country enters the hurricane season and faces increased rainfall and unpredictable weather patterns during the summer months, the ministry is urging all parents and guardians to exercise heightened caution in safeguarding children.

Families are being encouraged to monitor children closely, especially near rivers, streams, gullies, and the sea, educate them on the dangers of high tides, rough seas, and the unpredictable power of water bodies and heed all weather advisories and emergency alerts issued by ODPEM and the Meteorological Service of Jamaica.

The ministry said it remains committed to the safety and well-being of all students across the island.
