The National Integrity Action (NIA) has criticized the decision to remove the Auditor General as a Commissioner of the Integrity Commission, describing it as a dangerous erosion of integrity.

The decision was made during Wednesday’s meeting of the joint select committee on the integrity commission act, when government member Everald Warmington’s proposal for the A G’s removal from the commission was accepted.

The government members had cited conflict of interest as a reason for the decision, with Mr. Warmington saying the law states that the A G should not be part of any other board or public body.

The opposition members objected to the move.

In a statement today, the NI condemned what it said are recent manoeuvres to weaken the Integrity Commission and erode democratic oversight.

Principal Director Danielle Archer said this latest move raises serious concerns about transparency.

She called on Jamaicans to reject the decision and demand transparency.
