Scottish Premiership club St Mirren secures Jamaican international Richard King in major transfer coup
In a move hailed as a significant boost for Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, The Herald newspaper in Scotland has confirmed that Jamaican international defender Richard King is set to join the Buddies, marking a new chapter in the centre-back’s career.
The Herald describes the signing as “a transfer coup for manager Stephen Robinson,” highlighting the club’s success in securing the talented Cavalier and Reggae Boyz defender. King, who recently came off the bench in Jamaica’s 3-0 victory over Guatemala, will travel to Scotland later this month to finalize the necessary paperwork before the move is officially announced.
The deal, agreed upon between Cavalier and St Mirren for a nominal fee, will see King sign an initial two-year contract with an option to extend for a further year. The transfer also signals King’s first venture into UK football after previously being linked with Scottish giants Rangers during the January transfer window.
Cavalier co-owner Rudolph Speid, advised by football expert Tony Finnigan, was instrumental in facilitating the transfer. This move is expected to open doors for more Jamaican talent to break into European leagues, with King representing the forefront of promising prospects from Cavalier making their mark overseas.
King is set to replace Richard Taylor at St Mirren and had reportedly attracted interest from clubs in England. However, the Scottish Premiership club’s vision for King’s development and playing opportunities ultimately made it the best fit for the defender at this stage in his career.
King’s leadership credentials are well established, having captained Cavalier to back-to-back Jamaica Premier League titles and famously leading his team against an Inter Miami side featuring Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the Concacaf Champions League.
