JTA puts educators on stand by for protest marches against teaching council legislation

The island’s public school teachers have threatened to stage protest marches to highlight their grouse with the controversial Teaching Council legislation.

The contentions bill was recently passed, despite objections by educators, as well as the Opposition.

The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has long lobbied for changes to be made to aspects of the legislation, citing deleterious effects on the sector if implemented in its current form.

JTA President Elect Mark Malabver reiterated the concerns of teachers at a meeting in St. Mary.

He noted that the JTA recently submitted another document to the education ministry, responding to queries and re-emphasizing their grouse.

He said, if needs be, teachers will demonstrate at the ministry and at constituency offices.

He added that the JTA is also ready to take the matter to court.
